Holds: Home

Did you know that you can place an item on hold at the library? That's right - Hampden-Sydney students, faculty, and staff can now place an online hold on books, DVDs, and other library materials! Once you have placed a hold, library staff will pull the requested item and place it on the Hold shelf behind Circulation.

Why place an item on hold?

You may want to consider placing something on hold if:

  • The desired item is currently checked out to another patron
  • The item is currently on order, but has not yet been received by the library
  • You want the comfort and ease of picking items up without having to browse the stacks

Where do I pick up my holds?

Patrons can pick up holds at the Circulation Desk any time that the library is open. Requested items will be held for 14 days before being returned to the stacks.

To Place an Item on Hold:

  • Search the Library Catalog for the item you wish to place on hold.
  • Once you have found the item you want, click on the red "Place Hold" button that can be found in the item record.
  • Log in to your Bortz Library Account using your Hampden-Sydney email username and password (leave off the "@hsc.edu" from your username).
  • A dialog box will appear. Click "Place Hold" again.

To View or Cancel Your Holds:

  • Log in to your Bortz Library Account using your Hampden-Sydney email username and password (leave off the "@hsc.edu" from your username)
  • Navigate to the "Holds" tab
  • Within this tab, you may view the status of your holds as well as cancel any holds that you do not want
