Digitization Request

Bortz Library now offers digitization services services to current students and faculty for research and scholarly use. To request the digitization of any library materials, please read through the information on this page and fill out the Digitization Request Form. Please allow at least 48 hours (or two business days) for processing.

The library also offers self-scanning services at the Zeta Book Scanner in the Fuqua Technology Commons (FTC). Patrons may use the book scanner to create digital copies of personal materials as well as library materials. Please visit the FTC Desk for assistance

Scanning Archival Materials

Please contact Dawnelle Ion (dion@hsc.edu) directly to facilitate scanning of archival materials. Larger materials, such as maps, architectural plans, and construction plans may be too large for digitization at this time. Additionally, allow a minimum of 48 hours (up to two business days) for processing.

The nature of the Hampden-Sydney College Archives and Special Collections means that copyright or other information about restrictions may be difficult or even impossible to determine despite reasonable efforts. As a result, Hampden-Sydney College claims only physical ownership of most Special Collections materials.

The materials from our collections are made available for use in research, teaching, and private study, pursuant to U.S. Copyright law. The user must assume full responsibility for any use of the materials, including but not limited to, infringement of copyright and publication rights of reproduced materials. Any materials used for academic research or otherwise should be fully credited with the source.

Copyright Restrictions

The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

Please Note: Due to copyright restrictions, we are unable to digitize media materials such as feature films, CDs, DVDs, etc.
