Digitization Request: Home

Digitization Request

Bortz Library now offers digitization services services to current students and faculty for research and scholarly use. To request the digitization of any library materials, please read through the information on this page and fill out the Digitization Request Form at the bottom of the page. Please allow at least 48 hours for processing.

The library also offers self-scanning services at the Zeta Book Scanner in the Fuqua Technology Commons (FTC). Patrons may use the book scanner to create digital copies of personal materials as well as library materials. Please visit the FTC Desk for assistance

Scanning Archival Materials

Please contact Sarah Almond directly to facilitate scanning of archival materials. Please note that larger materials, such as maps, architectural plans, and construction plans may be too large for digitization at this time. Additionally, please allow at least 48 hours for processing.

The nature of the Hampden-Sydney College Archives and Special Collections means that copyright or other information about restrictions may be difficult or even impossible to determine despite reasonable efforts. As a result, Hampden-Sydney College claims only physical ownership of most Special Collections materials.

The materials from our collections are made available for use in research, teaching, and private study, pursuant to U.S. Copyright law. The user must assume full responsibility for any use of the materials, including but not limited to, infringement of copyright and publication rights of reproduced materials. Any materials used for academic research or otherwise should be fully credited with the source.

Copyright Restrictions

The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

Please Note: Due to copyright restrictions, we are unable to digitize media materials such as feature films, CDs, DVDs, etc.

Method of Delivery

All files will be sent to the email address provided in this form (must be a valid Hampden-Sydney College email address). If you would like to request another method of delivery, please note that in the Special Instructions Section of the form.

Digitization & Course Reserve

In order to help library patrons and staff practice appropriate social distancing this fall, faculty are strongly encouraged to consider making digital copies of some reserve materials available on Canvas. Please use the Digitization Request Form to request scans of reserve materials.

If you are requesting digital scans from materials that have not yet been put on Course Reserve for your class, please indicate this on the form and fill out our online Course Reserves Form. Library staff will add the requested materials to our reserve shelves and email you a digital copy of the requested scans so that they can be made available on Canvas.
